THE WHAT & HOW:
A three-level cartwheel system expanding the foundational cartwheel into a structured applied vocabulary of ground acrobatics. The practitioner enters from three different levels in space - squat, low gait, and standing - each altering the relationship to the ground, timing, and body organisation. Across each entry level, the cartwheel is expressed through three leg trajectories: low (close to the ground), mid (hip line), and overhead (full expression), creating a total of 9 variations.
Resource contents:
0:05 - Ipsi cartwheels from squat
1:24 - Ipsi- cartwheels from low-gait
2:39 - Ipsi-cartwheels from standing
The main focus is developing dexterity and adaptability within the cartwheel as a foundational pattern of ground acrobatics. By altering entry level and trajectory, the practitioner expands coordination range and expressive control while staying within the same core structure. This builds the understanding that small variations can rapidly multiply movement possibilities without changing the underlying skill, reinforcing that cartwheels are the primary reference point for ground acrobatic development.
A secondary focus is the quality of transitioning between levels without loss of flow. Because each variation begins and ends in different spatial positions, the practitioner learns to manage entry and exit as part of a continuous system rather than isolated actions. This sharpens the ability to reorganise movement across space while maintaining continuity.
Linked to this is the absorption and recycling of energy through transitions. Instead of stopping between repetitions, momentum is carried through the exit of one cartwheel and redirected into the next, creating a wave-like continuity through the body which can be recycled & directed back into the direction of travel. Observe this quality in all levels in space through the resource, and ensure its presence in practice.
Execution remains grounded in clear weight shift, committed inversion, and uninterrupted flow. Each variation should feel like part of an ongoing sequence rather than a single action, with transitions supporting continuous reorganisation through space.

THE WHAT:
Whilst having roots in the game of Capoeira, the 'AU Cortado' is a essentially a "short" cartwheel with ancient origins unknown. The 'A' refers to the shape of the body when in a squat/standing position - the 'U' (although perhaps more exactly a 'V') refers to the shape of the inverted ... -

As an ultimately dynamic movement travelling through inversion, with practice the 'AU cortado' (or, "short cartwheel") can be used to with efficiency for travel through space. It can also link seamlessly with other 'cartwheel' forms, such as the fundamental 'Travelling cartwheel' or 'St...
