THE WHAT:
The 'German-hang' (GH) and 'Skin the cat' (STC) are hanging shoulder-extension forms, meaning that the bodyweight is suspended from an anchor-point (here a bar) with the arms BEHIND the mid-line of the body. The main difference between the two variations is that the 'GH' emphasises an isometric hold in the hanging form, whereas practice of 'STC' emphasises the TRANSITION in and out of the form.
Of note is that both variations here are performed in a PRONATED-grip ("overhand" on the bar) - for the beginner, this more naturally elicits the strong shoulder-PROTRACTION - the upper-body "hollow" which is require to withstand the load, as well as reducing stress on the elbows which is more significant in "supinated" variations.
