THE WHAT:

From the first day of encountering the subject as one of potential "practice", this question has always dominated my mind. I am, of course, not the only one - far from it; I believe that it is the RESPONSIBILITY of ANYONE who is endeavouring to cultivate what they believe is a "Movement Practice" to consider. I believe it should enter the mind for consideration DAILY - I believe it is an integral PART of the practice.
To do so under the pretenses of finding a concrete, "fixed" answer is also a step away from the Movement that "Is". This is so much our futile habit: to place a layer of interpretation - a "frame" - BETWEEN us and the thing we actually want to understand, in an ironic attempt to understand it better. If we invest too heavily in this "frame", then, it only further removes us from it. At best, we learn more about the frame. At worst, we move further away from the subject of study at hand. We don't need answers - we only need consideration, observation, and reflection, based on our LIVED experience.
So, as I mention, sharing my 'Perspectives' here is not only an immediate danger, but an immediate CONTRADICTION: to express in a fixed form my opinions on a subject which, by its very definition CANNOT be fixed or located, betrays a glaring irony. The reason I choose to share my ideas on this clearly (and deliberately) provocative question now, then, is because whilst my ideas on many facets of this perspective have, and will continue to, change, there are some which have remained clearly CONSTANT, despite their regular "trials by fire".
Whilst these perspectives I share should therefore be taken as a "snapshot in time", through it I feel there is now a certain BACKBONE around which any particulars are free to continue changing, developing, and growing. And the backbone is this: Movement Practice is about facilitating learning and informed GROWTH across ALL layers of our individual and collective Being. Whilst this is arguably best framed through experience gathered through the PHYSICAL layer, it does not even require a physical-practice.
"If you didn't have a physical practice, would you still be a 'Movement Practitioner'?" This is the question I always return to. Invite it for consideration in your own practice, and may it help keep you directed in your ongoing journey.
