'Dragon-legs' inversion pattern

THE WHAT & HOW:
‘Dragon Legs’ is a foundational ground acrobatic context centred on repeated entrances into inversion through an alternating leg action, where one leg flexes as the other extends in a snapping, cyclical pattern. Though simple and highly accessible, it develops how the legs can generate, recycle, and transmit force through acrobatic movement, while also functioning as a useful interjection within free association.
The main focus is developing familiarity with the elastic contribution of the legs - how alternating flexion-extension, combined with hip opening, can help create lift, assist inversion, generate spiral, and support force both into and out of the hands. A key lesson is that the legs do not simply follow movement, but actively organise and propel it.
The movement can be entered from different trajectories - forward, lateral, or slightly rotational - allowing exploration of how angle changes organisation through the pattern. The snapping alternation of the legs also develops coordination that transfers into broader ground acrobatic vocabulary, especially cartwheel-based patterns where leg action can facilitate hip rotation and directional change.
Because the pattern is simple, it also works as connective “glue” in free association - something that can be plugged in between more demanding patterns to maintain continuity when cognitive load is high, while still enriching movement vocabulary.
Execution should prioritise a light, elastic quality through the legs, clear alternation between sides, and exploration of different entry trajectories. Practice from both sides, and use the leg action not just to enter inversion, but to help recycle force and support fluid entry and exit from the floor.
